Matt Roush's Top 10 (And Then Some) of 2011
Michelle Dockery and Dan Stevens 1. HOMELAND The best new series of the year is Showtime's twisty nail-biter of a psychological thriller, an emotionally intense cat-and-mouse game between two damaged souls: Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a Marine POW who may have been turned by terrorists during eight years in Iraqi captivity, and Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, the unstable CIA analyst who breaks all the rules to get under his skin - and at times under the sheets. (Bringing new meaning to undercover agent). The actors are as electrifying as the storytelling in this taut tale of homeland insecurity, which also features a marvelously restrained Mandy Patinkin as Carrie's melancholy mentor and a revelatory Morena Baccarin as Brody's understandably conflicted wife. Homeland comes from the veteran producers of 24, who have lost none of their knack for sustained suspense, but within this more realistic framework have been able to concoct a thoughtful and gripping meditation on the human toll of the war on terror. 2. DOWNTON ABBEY A complete delight. PBS' sprawling, Emmy-winning Masterpiece miniseries, with echoes of Jane Austen and Upstairs Downstairs in its wittily sudsy panache, is set on a grand but embattled English estate in the years before WWI, with romantic and financial intrigues distracting the well-born and servant class alike. First among equals in the brilliant ensemble: Maggie Smith as the perpetually indignant Countess Dowager, given to hilariously withering pronouncements like, "No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else's house." The very idea! Want more Matt Roush? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! 3. BREAKING BAD Not missing a beat in its excruciatingly suspenseful fourth season, AMC's dark fable of violent corruption pits the desperate Walt White (Bryan Cranston, deepening the darkness of this outrageous anti-hero) against the icy kingpin Gus Kring (Giancarlo Esposito in a masterful performance of understated menace) in an unpredictable season-long battle of wills. After the cunningly plotted and literally explosive season climax, Walt says "I won" to his morally compromised wife Skyler (Anna Gunn). Yes, he did, but at what cost? 4. COMMUNITY-vs-THE BIG BANG THEORY Airing opposite each other all year on Thursdays were two fabulous extremes on the spectrum of comedy magic. NBC's low-rated gem, the epitome of cult comedy, the experimental and existential - and hugely entertaining - "fan favorite" Community defies genre categorization (a Glee holiday parody is also a takeoff on Invasion of the Body Snatchers) while bringing to life an ensemble of indelible misfits. And dominating the time period, The Big Bang Theory, CBS' gut buster of a monster sitcom hit, has only intensified its geeky genius since beefing up the roles of the ladies in these dysfunctional brainiacs' lives, with Mayim Bialik's dour Amy and Melissa Rauch's perky Bernadette keeping Kaley Cuoco's Penny from being the oddest girl out. 5. GAME OF THRONES HBO successfully brings the epic fantasy to TV with dynamic impact in this adult, red-blooded and relentlessly brutal saga derived from George R.R. Martin's iconic page-turners. Grim tidings befall good people (including Sean Bean's noble Ned Stark) in a medieval mash-up of dynastic mayhem with just the right amount of supernatural menace. 6. JUSTIFIED In the sensational second season of FX's tangy, twangy crime drama, the lethally charming U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) meets his match - in Emmy winner Margo Martindale's monstrously ruthless Kentucky mountain matriarch Mags Bennett. With her deadly Apple Pie moonshine always at arm's reach, she presides over a tangled multi-family feud for control of Harlan County. If only her bumbling offspring had inherited her steel. Justified goes down with the kick of blended whiskey. 7. THE MIDDLE & MODERN FAMILY The have-not Hecks of Indiana and the well-off West Coast Pritchett/Dunphy clan have little in common, except being uncommonly funny. ABC's underappreciated The Middle nails the raucous comic anxiety of overwhelmed parents (the award-worthy Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn) and their underachieving square-peg kids: lazy Axl, Poor Sue and oddball Brick. In terms of cultural relevance, The Middle may actually be TV's most significant current comedy. Meanwhile, the acclaimed Modern Family continues to spearhead TV's comedy renaissance with sophisticated farce that anyone with relatives can relate to. 8. FRINGE Living on the fringe of the TV schedule and ratings, Fox's sci-fi/fantasy mind-blower just keeps expanding in its mystical complexity. As Peter Bishop plays peek-a-boo between warring universes, we're treated to cautionary Frankenstein parables of the dangers of playing God. A more than worthy successor to The X-Files. 9. THE GOOD WIFE Once Alicia (Emmy winner Julianna Margulies) embraced her bad side, in a tumultuous secret liaison with her boss Will (Josh Charles), network TV's most compelling drama is also its steamiest, cunningly blending the personal with a sharply written legal procedural that is never less than stimulating. 10. NEW GIRL Four's company, and great company at that. In Fox's endearingly zany new comedy, a free-spirited pixie (Zooey Deschanel in a career-defining test of the how-much-is-too-cute threshold) moves into a man cave with three guys, including Max Greenfield as the hilariously smarmy Schmidt. Their bro-code of conduct will never be the same with this sweet, silly and needy interloper in their midst. She's a hoot, and so's the show. Under the heading of honorable mention, I would have liked to include DirectTV/NBC's Friday Night Lights and FX's Rescue Me on the list for their final seasons, but we were already cheering their finales within the same issue's "Cheers & Jeers" package, so honor was done. In retrospect, I'm sorry I didn't find room for FX's small but mighty, and darkly funny, Louie. Under most improved, and getting better all the time, Parks and Recreation succeeds Community (going on undeserved hiatus) as NBC's best comedy. Damages enjoyed another taut, suspenseful season on DirecTV. What's TV's best American horror story? Not that overrated FX monstrosity, but AMC's imperfect but perfectly harrowing The Walking Dead. And my biggest surprise since fall, because the pilot didn't blow me away, is the guilty pleasure of ABC's Revenge, especially since the evil Tyler showed up to spread his malice in the Hamptons. He makes Emily look like an amateur. In terms of the year's biggest disappointments, that list would include the aforementioned American Horror Story (which, with the exception of the fabulous Jessica Lange, is as inept and indulgent as it is sickeningly ugly), HBO's turgid Mildred Pierce miniseries, the woeful Oscar-night hosting of James Franco and Anne Hathaway, Starz' misguidedly Americanized Torchwood: Miracle Day, ABC's shoulda-been-more-fun Pan Am, AMC's shoulda-been-more-original Hell on Wheels, and ABC's shoulda-never-aired Charlie's Angels reboot. There are more (many thankfully forgotten), but why dwell on the bad? Here's to an even better 2012 in TV. Happy new year! Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

A 'Tinker's' murmer
Helmer Tomas Alfredson kicked off the Dec. 7 preem of Focus Features' "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" at the Arclight by singing a Swedish version of "Happy Birthday" to producer Robyn Slovo. After receiving a warm round of applause, Alfredson told the crowd he hoped they'd understand his film, based on John le Carre's dense espionage novel. The afterparty at the Chateau Marmont found stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong mingling with well-wishers. Alfredon mused about the pic's protag, George Smiley, being "so complicated for an actor to do, because Smiley doesn't speak for 16 or 17 minutes in the beginning, and in the end, he raises his voice slightly." On certain takes, Oldman's Smiley was a bit too low-keyed. "Tomas would ask me to go a little bigger sometimes, because what I was doing was so small that it wasn't registering," recalled the thesp. "He'd ask me to glance over at Colin and I'd say, 'I did,' and he'd say, 'Can you make it a little bit bigger because we didn't quite see it.' By the end, we communicated telepathically." n Contact Jeff Sneider at jeff.sneider@variety.com

I came unstuck on numerous occasions. I had been just searching for adrenaline. But when someone stated something rude in my experience now, I'd just accept it. This is an age factor. All of a sudden, 'Lock, Stock,' and 'Snatch' all of a sudden make much more sense. Guy Ritchie's next film, 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game Title of Shadows,' opens on Christmas Day. Tarsem Singh Wants To Direct 'Samurai Jack'
After the big time success of his latest project "Immortals," director Tarsem Singh has his eyes on the project he'd like to tackle next. Tarsem recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he would like to direct the live-action version of "Samurai Jack," the beloved and critically acclaimed animated series that aired on Cartoon Network from 2001 to 2004. The potential director and subject combination is sure to have fans nodding their heads in agreement. Tarsem is known particularly for his otherworldly visuals and could theoretically make a great director for the unique art direction of "Samurai Jack." The animated series ran for four seasons and followed the titular character, a feudal Japanese warrior banished to the future as he desperately searches for a way to return to his own time. Over the course of its run, the show won four Emmy awards. New Line attempted a live-action adaptation of "Samurai Jack" back in the early 2000s with the now-controversial Brett Ratner at the helm. When a film did not materialize during that attempt, the rights to the film reverted back to Cartoon Network, who currently holds them. No official discussions about a Singh-directed "Samurai Jack" film have taken place. Singh's next film, "Mirror, Mirror," a new take on the story of Snow White is scheduled to hit theaters in March of next year. Would you like to see a "Samurai Jack" live-action film directed by Tarsem Singh? Let us know what you think in the comments below and on Twitter!

Evans spoken to Moviefone about 'Immortals' (search for our interview with him about playing the youngest version from the Greek God nearer to the movie's release on November. 11) and just how much he's taking pleasure in shooting the "longest job of his existence" in New Zealand. Your character, Bard the Bowman, includes a very pivotal role. This is a large moment there in the finish from the story. There's a legendary moment there, yeah. Are you currently practicing your archery abilities? Yes, I had been trained for 3 days in New Zealand having a stunt coordinator, learning my new weapon. I have gone from swords in 'Musketeers' along with a bow -- a lengthy bow at this -- for 'The Hobbit,' therefore it is been a very interesting education, due to there being very techniques used in utilizing a bow and arrow, so I have learned plenty of them to really make it look realistic. When would you return to focus on it? Time passes in three days for my second block. Going for a little break to spread out 'Musketeers' and 'Immortals' and speak with you lovely people. The stars who made 'The The almighty from the Rings' films had this unique camaraderie, are you currently going through that on 'The Hobbit?' Yes, I'm. It's interesting since the boys -- so when I only say the boys, I am talking about the dwarves -- happen to be there since Feb, so that they already had their team setup. There is however an attractive energy when you attend Wellington and also you satisfy the whole team, including Fran [Walsh] and Philippa [Boyens] and also the whole crew. Everyone. It is a Kiwi quality that we love plus they immediately embrace you and also you are area of the family. It simply kind of goes beyond completely with the layers [from the production], in the runners up up. Everybody's there loving the very fact they are doing something incredibly special and that i feel totally honored to stay in this family. Personally i think some of it now and that i miss them greatly and that i can't wait to return, to tell the truth. Just how much longer is it necessary to film your behalf? I am there until the center of the coming year. It is the longest job of my existence. We can not wait to determine it. Neither can one. 'Enlightened' Cast Teases the HBO Dramedy
Laura Dern stars as Amy, who, after a very public breakdown, returns from a treatment center in Hawaii with an entirely new outlook on life. In the HBO series Enlightened, Amy returns to reality to deal with her mother (played by Dern's real-life mother Diane Ladd), her troublesome ex-husband (Luke Wilson) and a new set of co-workers who may not agree with her new outlook on life.our editor recommendsEnlightened: TV ReviewHBO develops 'Enlightened' comedy The cast of Enlightened, which premieres on HBO on Monday, October 10, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere red carpet event, and gave THR an inside-look at the upcoming dramedy. Here are five things seen and heard on the red carpet: PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview 2011: The New Shows 1. Laura Dern Finds It Easier to Work With Her Mother Dern admitted that she is a little more enlightened herself because she found it easier to work with her mother, Diane Ladd, now than when she was younger. Dern worked alongside her mother in the films Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, but told THR that Enlightened was a better experience. "It's a very different experience than working with her in my early 20s, as I said to her jokingly a few minutes ago, 'You know when we worked together when I was 20, every word you said triggered me, now every eighth word you say triggers me-so there is incremental growth!'" STORY: Tim Goodman's Fall DVR List 2. Diane Ladd Couldn't Watch Her Daughter Have a Mental Breakdown Dern's mother told THR that she couldn't and wouldn't watch her daughter's scene in which she has a mental breakdown. "I don't watch unless I have a scene with her and of course then I'm fighting her in the scene you know, and I'm involved in my own character," she said. "But no, if I'm not in the scene with her, I'm not going to watch her go through that. No, that tears my heart." PHOTOS: Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated Shows 3. Luke Wilson Says "Anything Goes" With His Character Luke Wilson was able to really push with his character, Levi, who is Dern's character's ex-husband. "I mean for me it was always kind of fun to play this character because I'd always think that because what this guy does with kind of drugs and alcohol, he can be in a great mood, he can be you know on the edge, he can be laughing, he can literally be kind of alone and sobbing so it's really kind of anything goes." TV REVIEW: Enlightened 4. Diane Ladd Is Sick of Reality Shows Ladd had plenty of nice things to say about working with her daughter and the HBO show. However, she's not such a fan of all the reality shows that have infiltrated television. "Everybody I tell about show they say, 'Oh thank god it's not a reality show,'" said Ladd. "I mean there are one or two good ones but I'm sick to death of them, up to here." Ladd went on to express her frustration at the popularity of reality TV and its effects on her own trade. "My people aren't working, they can't make a living, and I think it's a tragedy. You've got all these great writers and directors and actors and cinematographers, out there and they're not utilized." 5. Tim Sharp Plays the Bad Guy, and It's Funny Tim Sharp (Six Feet Under) plays the new boss on the HBO show, and he admits that he's an obstacle for Dern's character. "I guess I'm the bad guy of the show if there is one," he said. "I'm her main obstacle. I'm by no means evil, I'm just a douche bag and it's funny." 'Shame' Start Searching: Teaser Poster for Fox Searchlight's Questionable Film (Exclusive)
I am happy so as offer site visitors from the blog a distinctive consider first the teaser one-sheet for Shame, Steve McQueen's questionable new drama of a sex addict (Michael Fassbender) and also the sister (Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan) that opened up at Venice -- where Fassbender was named best actor -- and carried out Telluride and Toronto in September, was acquired right after that by Fox Searchlight, and you'll be released theatrically on December 2. (Text continues below image.) McQueen and Fassbender first teamed on Hunger (2008), a similarly gritty film about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, which was McQueen's directorial debut and switched Fassbender in to a hot commodity (He lost 38 pounds for your role). McQueen has not developed a film since, but Fassbender has labored prolifically, starring in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009), Cary Fukunaga's Jane Eyre (2011), Matthew Vaughn's X-Males: Top Quality (2011), and David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method (that's likely to be out November 23), among others. PHOTOS: Telluride Film Festival: 12 Films to know A few who caught Shame round the festival circuit, including this author, thought it was spectacular, but doubted whether or not this would ever start to see the light of day -- or, I will say, dark from the public theater. Why? Because it includes numerous moments showing full frontal nudity (including from Fassbender and Mulligan) and sexual intercourse (of several types), none which could certainly be "edited around" simply because they appear car film and so are integral towards the plot. This led to any studio considering disseminating the film will have to accept the fact it'll recieve an NC-17 rating within the MPAA, which naturally limits the quantity of theaters that may be examined and guides that may be promoted. Nevertheless, Searchlight made a decision to consider a risk about it, most most likely since they think that Fassbender and Mulligan's gutsy performances might register while using Academy's acting branch (that's been proven to reward harmful and risque work once in some time, such Michelle Williams' in Blue Valentine a year ago). And, indeed, if any studio can alter Shame right into a celebration movie and/or honours contender, it's Searchlight, which has attracted more than a few rabbits from hats in recent honours seasons, and, good release date for Shame, remains digging for the next. Produced by Joao Daniel Tikhomiroff, Michael Tikhomiroff, Gil Ribeiro, Vincente Amorim. Executive producers, Eliane Ferreira, Oliver Kwon, Bernardo da Fonesca. Co-producers, Daniel Filho, Caique Martins Ferreira, Anne Pinheiro Guimaraes. Directed by Vincente Amorim. Script, David Franca Mendes, good book by Fernando Morais. With: Tsuyoshi Ihara, Takako Tokiwa Eiji Okuda, Shun Sugata, Kimiko Years of age, Eduardo Moscovis, Celine Miyuki, Issamu Yazaki. (Japanese, Portuguese dialogue)Amazing, little-known historic occasions shape Vincente Amorim's imaginary publish-World war ii drama "Dirty Hearts," occur Brazil's large Japanese colony. Sequestered through the war, stop all Nippon guides, most immigrants rejected to consider their country did not triumph. Obsessed towns sprang up, concentrating on people who acknowledged Japan's surrender as "dirty hearts," and beginning a murderous internecine campaign against them. Like Amorim's 2008 "Good," "Hearts" follows the fate from the good guy taken up in fascistic madness, here told using the eyes of his disillusioned wife. Though pic is unimaginatively shot, its explosive written content could launch it into distribution. Friendly youthful neighborhood digital digital photographer Takahashi (Tsuyoishi Ihara, "Letters From Iwo Jima," "13 Assassins") and also the lovely wife, Miyuki (Takako Tokiwa), appear untouched with the distant war. But tensions mount around reviews of Japan's loss, what is the news denounced as enemy propaganda by almost all immigrants. A correctly-loved part of the town, the somewhat naive Takahashi is designated by diehard Col. Watanabe (Eiji Okuda), a monomaniacal fanatic with no redeeming qualities. Takahashi, believing that his loyal duty is dependant on the extermination of traitors, emerges a samurai sword to complete the job. First to go to is Takahashi's friend Aoki (Issamu Yazaki), who socialized just like a simple translator for your Brazilian police and happened to consider that accounts of Japan's defeat were genuine. Helmer Amorim stretches the graphic execution scene in painful, gory detail, Takahashi returning home bloodied and demoralized with a wife who progressively begins to know what he's done. Once compromised, Takahashi is firmly caught inside the colonel's web, killing sensible males whom he once referred to as pals and losing the adoration for his wife and also the self-respect on the way. In David Franca Mendes' melodramatic script, Takahashi stands alone within the moral ambiguity: The colonel's other fans are referred to as villainous thugs delighting in meting out dying and destruction, while all Takahashi's rapidly dwindling pals and acquaintances are thoughtful family males who see no virtue in denying reality. Amorim posits his film just like a domestic drama carried out on the substantial historic stage, with apparent relevance to contemporaneous issues of bigotry, fanaticism and denial. The sepia-well toned pic marks little distinction between inside and outdoors, whether Brazilian police stations or Japanese houses. The expansion design, made to convey claustrophobia and sequestration (it's rarely apparent once the colony can be a war-created ghetto or possibly a pre-existent enclave), mainly handles to look like one large, brown movie set.Camera (color, widescreen), Rodrigo Monte editor, Diana Vasconcellos music, Akihiko Matsumoto production designer, Daniel Flaksman costume designer, Christina Kangussu appear, Jose Louzeiro re-recording mixer, Armando Torres Junior. casting, Patricia Faria, Yutaka Tachibana. Corey Stoll on Night time in Paris, Being Ernest Hemingway and also the Audition a person can have
Should you haven’t yet seen Woodsy Allen’s fantastic Night time in Paris, do your favor and prevent reading through this now. (Then do your bigger favor and go take a look.) Perhaps the easiest method to benefit from the film is understanding little to nothing about its protagonist Gil (Owen Wilson) or his late-evening exploits round the Town of Light, which culminate in encounters with Gil’s literary and artistic heroes. Kind of. Corey Stoll knows things i’m speaking about. That’s because Stoll has the wedding of Night time’s many showcases: As Ernest Hemingway, the native NYer brings clipped, piercing levity to Gil’s disbelieving romp with the Jazz Era and beyond. It’s a job as major because the film itself, using the 35-year-old actor most widely known as detective “TJ” Jaruszalski on Law & Order: LA rocking a Hemingway hairpiece and stalking round the salons and saloons of Paris with outsized aplomb. It’s a game title-changer for Stoll as you would expect, thumping the film and TV veteran right into a new echelon of not only visibility, but additionally flexibility. Movieline met track of Stoll lately to speak within the Night time factor, balancing guy versus myth, and why his parents can’t stop watching (and re-watching, and re-watching). Night time in Paris is virtually a phenomenon with this point. What’s your undertake that phenomenon, the way it’s developed as well as your place there? It’s all very surprising. I believe in the second I acquired the role — or in the second I auditioned for that role — I though, “This rocks !.” However it’s strange: It’s hard being an actor to not consider what several things is going to do for the career. Shockingly, it wasn’t things i was considering whatsoever with this particular — this dream opportunity to play probably the most amazing People in america ever for just one of my heroes. For Woodsy Allen! And So I thought, “Yeah, case great.” But his movies haven’t been making huge splashes during the last couple of years, and so i wasn’t expecting this to become any kind of popular. However I also understood it’s a Woodsy Allen movie, therefore it’s likely to last. It’s likely to be a part of film history. So all this — it’s his greatest hit ever, a minimum of when it comes to gross and all sorts of that — it’s awesome, but I wasn't expecting it. Which means you contacted it as being an innovative chance? Absolutely. I'd a lot time for you to prepare, that was so excellent. Frequently if you have time for you to prepare, you don’t always get sound advice. However it all kind of exercised that i can just read Hemingway and discover about him. I possibly could have ready for a couple of years years. It had been unlimited. How have you prepare? Reading through was the majority of it. I just read about him contributing to another figure for the reason that circle, however the I had been daily hearing the sounds — the tempos — of his writing, the muscularity of this. Really speaking it aloud frequently was the very best and helpful factor which i did. Can there be any film or video clip of Hemingway available? I’ve i never thought to appear. I’m unsure. I only took in to 1 little audio factor, also it am not the Hemingway you think about whenever you imagine him. Clearly it's him. It’s his real voice, but… So was your method of play Hemingway once we’ve mythologized him versus Hemingway the historic figure? Well, he mythologized themself. But yes, it’s the first kind. It’s not really a biopic. Many people have stated, “It could be so awesome when the whole movie involved him.” I’m unsure — a minimum of how a moments I'd were written — if my performance could have been sustainable for any whole movie. I believe a part of what’s effective about this is you just obtain a taste from it — most likely much like Hemingway themself. I believe he’d most likely be fun to spend time with for any weekend. I don’t think you’d want for traveling him to Kilimanjaro. He alienated virtually everybody he understood in the existence. And So I was searching at the rsum returning a couple of years. Your roles incorporate a detective, agent, sergeant, detective, “Intel type,” agent… How can you think hard-boiled figures you’ve performed inform playing a man like Hemingway — even when it’s basically delivering them up? That’s interesting. Really, I had been just searching in a clip where I performed this hit guy — in Lucky Number Slevin. He was this orthodox Jewish hit guy, super deadpan. I had been watching it and thinking, “That’s kind of things i’m doing with Hemingway.” It had been type of shocking in my experience. But that stillness and directness is a factor which i’ve had the opportunity to take advantage of a little. It really comes more from theater: that capability to plant yourself and extremely show up. Going further back, what's your background? Where come from, how have you get a start? I’m came from here[NY City]. I had been born around the Upper West Side. I visited our prime School for Carrying out Arts here, then disappeared to liberal arts college and returned. After I was attending college, I had been doing much more experimental, performance-arty types of stuff. However I cam back and began employed in theater. I visited grad school for theater and was working here for some time, after which I went to L.A. having a play which had moved from NY. That’s after i began doing film and tv. I’ve return a couple of occasions to complete some theater. However, you’d state that your principal interest now's doing film and TV? I believe for the short term, it's. At this time you will find possibilities opening for me personally in ways they hadn’t before in film and tv — especially film. I’d like to focus on that. However it’s by pointing out best project to engage in. Clearly there’s some calculus within the career stuff you need to consider, however it’s not always about which medium it's. Film is kind of rarefied, harder factor to obtain good jobs in, but theater and tv may also offer the opportunity to play great roles and use great people. I certainly am not cutting myself removed from that.

5 Favorite Senior High School Comedies
5 Favorite Senior High School Comedies By Christy Lemire August 26, 2011 Photo by Universal Pictures "16 Candle lights" La (AP) That magical time is here again: the beginning of the new school year. Time for you to start thinking about new ways to ditch class and blow off homework. Here is a suggestion should you seem like waiting: five of my favorite comedies about senior high school. Don't be concerned, there will not be considered a quiz after: "Fast Occasions at Ridgemont High" (1982): A lot of classic lines. So many great tunes. And the like a good youthful cast of then-unknown stars, brought by Sean Penn, Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Forest Whitaker. Individuals people who was raised within the 1980s most likely appreciate everyday "Fast Occasions" with great fondness and nostalgia. In the day, though, it appeared pretty racy it matter-of-factly portrayed a personality getting an abortion, after all. However it was refreshingly honest concerning the way teens talk and relate the way they get wasted making mistakes within an early illustration showing author Cameron Crowe's excellent ear for dialogue. "Rushmore" (1998): Clever, sweet and crackling with artistic energy, this really is still Wes Anderson's best film. His trademark stylistic methods and dependence on detail felt new and fresh back then, plus they offered the storyline perfectly. Rushmore Academy's ultimate joiner, Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), is a little of the lonely, odd duck with a few romantic, misguided notions. Sure, he's a compulsive liar, but you will naturally wish to emulate him: He's prepared to try anything or befriend anybody. And despite the fact that he's usually wisest guy within the room, he's never cynical. He's observant and kind. He sees the great in people and that is how he will get his heart damaged. "16 Candle lights" (1984): While "The Breakfast Club" remains my favorite John Hughes movie ever, it will get heavy and angsty because it goes along. You may like "Ferris Bueller's BreakInch best, that would be also a suitable answer. But this story of the regular girl (Molly Ringwald) whose family does not remember the most crucial birthday of her existence is simply rapid-fire amusing from begin to finish. It entirely will get the absurdity of adolescence and precisely delineates the rigid caste system of senior high school without ever taking sides. Everyone's a freak or perhaps an idiot in their unique way and everyone's were built with a secret crush with an not possible Mike Ryan type. "Election" (1999): This early feature from director Alexander Payne would be a dead-on, dark satire of how senior high school energy struggles go a long way while shrewdly supplying a metaphor for the own political system. Reese Witherspoon is simply insanely adorable in her own irritatingly perky way as Tracy Flick, who'll visit absolutely nothing to be chosen student body leader. You do not blame Matthew Broderick as her social studies teacher from walking in and seeking to contain her ambition. However the script from Payne and Jim Taylor also finds the inadequacy and vulnerability in Tracy, which prompts our unpredicted sympathy. "Heathers" (1988): Like "Election," this pitch-black comedy required an unflinching consider the means by which senior high school kids shoot for control and, on the other hand, the means by which they are prepared to fall in line to become recognized. In director Michael Lehmann's increased version of reality, the Heathers rule the college three women with exactly the same title who cruelly dominate everybody around them. Winona Ryder plays the rare Veronica who's permitted in their clique, but she sees her peers clearly making her easy pickings for the subversive J.D. (a youthful, exciting Christian Slater). A Tent Filled with Wild birds presentation Created by Maggie Betts, Ben Selkow, Joedan Okun, Benjamin Prager. Executive producer, Roland Betts. Directed, compiled by Maggie Betts. With: Mutinta Mweemba, Abarcon Mweemba, Patrick Nchimunya, Matildah Mweemba. (Tonga dialogue)Sober highlighting on funereal, "The Company" is really a painterly, poetic docu in regards to a polygamous family in Zambia the mother and father are Aids-positive, the ladies are pregnant and everything is so dysfunctional that giving birth is really a mixed blessing at best. It's difficult to suggest what else helmer Maggie Betts may have completed with a topic she clearly likes you. However the movie's tirelessly morbid tone is not likely to have it much play, ill serving its tries to raise awareness about Africa's Helps crisis and methods to prevent infant Aids. Utilizing a surfeit of portraiture along with a score too melodramatic for that film's overall aesthetic, Betts informs the storyline of Mutinta Mweemba, the 2nd from the three spouses of Abarcon Mweemba, a player within the village of Keemba as well as an easy villain. His spouses -- who include Brenda, the first one to die, and Matildah, the final to obtain examined -- perform the work Abarcon struts while seated. The household's a lost cause, so any dramatic tension is supplied by the fate of Mutinta's unborn baby, a reveal pulled out to the stage of absurdity.Camera (color, HD), Kat Westergaard editor, Flavia p Souza music, Daniel Burns, David Della Santa. Film directors reign at Emmys
Todd Haynes directs Kate Winslet on the set of HBO miniseries 'Mildred Pierce.'Feature film director Olivier Assayas earned an Emmy nom for 'Carlos.'Starting in the late 1950s, television invaded the movies in a two-fold attack. First, it seized the moviegoing audience, offering up enough free entertainment in the comfy safety of home that the notion of bothering to go out to theaters became a burden that had a simple solution: Stay in. Second, TV style infiltrated the cinema, from directors like Sidney Lumet and John Frankenheimer to actors like Steve McQueen bringing their smallscreen talents to the bigscreen. Now, the invasion has reversed course. Filmmakers from the cinema world are shifting to TV with unprecedented speed and gusto, giving up little if any of their artistic vision in the process and snatching Emmy noms along the way.No fewer than 11 of the 15 directing nominees in the drama, nonfiction and miniseries-movie categories are feature film helmers, including such world-class filmmakers as Olivier Assayas ("Carlos"), Martin Scorsese (with twin noms for the pilot of "Boardwalk Empire" and the doc profile on Elia Kazan, "A Letter to Elia"), Todd Haynes ("Mildred Pierce"), Neil Jordan ("The Borgias") and Curtis Hanson ("Too Big to Fail").Add to this impressive roster the likes of Canadian filmmaker Jeremy Podeswa (the "Boardwalk Empire" episode, "Anastasia"), "Monster" director Patty Jenkins ("The Killing" pilot) and feature doc filmmakers Josh Fox ("Gasland"), Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman ("Cinema Verite") plus Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato ("Becoming Chaz"), and the roster begins to resemble the Oscars more than a traditional Emmy rundown. And as these directors note, their tube projects were, for all intents and purposes, movies with fewer strings attached."I approached this like a regular movie, in terms of its shooting," says Hanson of "Too Big to Fail," his HBO drama based on Andrew Ross Sorkin's book-length account of the 2008 fiscal crisis that verged on economic meltdown. "The challenge was that it was largely contained to offices with guys talking, so how do you make that visually interesting? My choices weren't to compromise for the television screen at all, but to come up with the most interesting camera setups I could find."Haynes' adaptation (with screenwriter and novelist Jon Raymond, who usually collaborates with filmmaker Kelly Reichardt) of James M. Cain's novel "Mildred Pierce," may prove to be a test case in how a highly developed cinema language and style cedes no ground to the supposedly limiting TV confines. Effectively a five-hour and 40-minute movie, it emphatically reduces the impact of Michael Curtiz's Oscar-winning version with Joan Crawford, while displaying all of Haynes' exceptional gifts for aesthetic textures in color and light. As a sign of its inherent cinematic punch, the film will screen in its entirety at the Venice Film Festival."Cain had written his 'Madame Bovary' with 'Mildred Pierce,' a social novel with a domestic narrative," Haynes says. "Jon brought the novel to my attention, and it was such a shock to discover since I so much loved the movie. I jettisoned any noir touches, and turned to the American style in '70s films like 'Chinatown,' 'Klute' and the 'Godfather' films, many shot by (cinematographer) Gordon Willis, which stressed a cool, sophisticated camera that was more observant and less intrusive."Assayas, whose films from "Summer Hours" to "Irma Vep" consider a host of topics from genre to economic and cultural globalization, was offered "Carlos" by Canal Plus. The Euro cable giant, he says, "understands cinema, since they have one foot producing in the film world and one foot in television. They allowed me not only a budget far exceeding anything I had before ($15 million), but also the chance to make a film without compromising an inch."When "Carlos" appeared last year, it premiered in an out-of-competition Cannes slot, and its astonishing screening inspired many observers to note that had the festival's rules not applied -- that a pic set for tube play can't compete -- "Carlos" may very well have won the Palme d'Or.Docmakers like Fox made "Gasland" for the bigscreen first -- it preemed at last year's Sundance Film Festival -- and then was picked up by HBO. But fellow docmakers Pulcini and Berman, who shifted from docs to narrative movies a few years ago with "American Splendor," made "Cinema Verite" for the premium cabler, and even further, determined to "make a movie that was TV commenting on TV itself," Berman says."We never conceded to filming for the TV screen," she adds, "except for perhaps a few more closeups than we'd normally do."ROAD TO THE EMMYS: THE DIRECTOR Film directors reign at EmmysDrama | Comedy | Minis, Movies and Dramatic Special | Nonfiction | Variety, Music and Comedy Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
